Vegans Also Need To Remember -- It's not about YOU -- It's About The ANIMALS

The issue: We’re in an era right now when we are finally starting to see celebrities converting to veganism and plant-based diets, and as a result, it’s finally becoming acceptable to even *mention* the word “Vegan” on TV. Yet quite a few loud and obnoxious “Vegans” can’t help but miss the grandness of the forest for the tiniest sprouts, focusing instead on a petty tabloid-level game of “let’s see which famous people are less perfect than me.”

This is adapted from a comment I posted to Vegan.com’s Facebook Page regarding the video at the bottom from David Duchovny’s appearance on Bill Maher.

Hurray for both of them!
I’m 100% Vegan and 100% supportive of ANY mention of animal rights and veganism in the media that can EASILY result in hundreds of millions of animals saved from torture.

In the end, it’s not about perfectionism — It’s 100% about saving the animals. If 20 million people switch to 50% vegan, how many animals does that save? You can do the math… But it’s way more than that! Because this is a MOVEMENT, and a mass conversion of millions of people even PARTIALLY to “vegetarian-ish” will change the media conversation — it will become a “trend” — and the market will respond to the trend — and it will become mainstream — and people will respond to the new industry push towards cheaper plant-based foods — and the market will respond to the new demand — and people will start becoming more open to changing their minds once their stomachs and tongues are satisfied — and guess what? ANIMALS WILL BE SAVED IN RECORD NUMBERS.

So stop the petty tabloid-like fascination with imperfect people. This is about ANIMALS.  (…)

How To Make Char Cloth To Light Your Campfire Faster Without Matches

Never worry about starting a campfire again! You can easily prepare your own quick lighting emergency “char cloth” with just a tuna can, T-shirt, and a your barbecue grill.

Essentially the video describes making a quick and dirty DIY gasification stove — like the ones many backpacking survivalists use to cook food — but the focus of this project is simply to get at the valuable leftover charcoal without the (slight) added complexity of designing an efficient camp stove.

But if you already have a gasifying camp stove — like the SoloStove or another homemade version — you can now add versions of “char cloth” to your emergency kit. (I love the cotton balls idea!) ...

How Does A Four Wheel Camper Roof Lift Work?

I love the clever way the roof lift is done on these pop-up campers.

No hydraulics or fancy expensive mechanisms — just simple mechanical elegance. Gotta love it.

It’d be great if I could see one up close so I can figure out the cheapest easiest way to duplicate this for my own DIY camper. I also wonder how it would change things if the popup was much taller, so the bars would have to cross. Hmm… Ideas, anyone?

In contrast, you can see the standard lifter system employed in Four Wheel Campers beginning at about 1:09 in this video.

ourpresidents:

Happy National Doughnut Day!

JFK Library:

Did JFK Really Tell Berlin He Was a Jelly Doughnut?

One of the iconic moments of John F. Kennedy’s Presidency comes from a speech he gave at the Rathaus Schöneberg in West Berlin, Germany on June 26, 1963. When the President declared “Ich bin ein Berliner!” to a cheering crowd, he preserved the German phrase in history. But the speech has been plagued by claims that, instead of expressing international unity by stating “I am a Berliner!” in German as he intended, JFK enthusiastically shouted a less inspiring phrase: “I am a jelly doughnut!”

Newspapers, magazines, and even textbooks have repeated the story for decades: a native Berliner would’ve said “Ich bin Berliner” and JFK’s use of the article ein changed the meaning, causing chuckles as the crowd imagined the jelly doughnut called a Berliner in parts of Germany. Fifty years later, a new generation may wonder: How could the President, who hand-wrote the pronunciation on his speech card to be sure he’d get it right, make such a cringe-worthy mistake?

But many historians and linguists have stepped in to poke a hole in the doughnut story and clear JFK’s name of this deep-fried controversy. Historian Andreas Daum notes, “saying ein Berliner is correct if used metaphorically,” which, of course, is what Kennedy was doing – not saying he was literally from Berlin, but that he was symbolically with Berlin. Historian Jürgen Eichhoff argues that the wording JFK used was actually the only way to express this particular meaning, and the German speakers (including West Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt) who heard JFK practice the speech agreed.

Historians also point out that archival evidence (like recordings and witness interviews) debunks the idea that the German-speaking crowd found anything weird about JFK’s wording: “No one in the square,” Presidential advisor McGeorge Bundy later said, “confused JFK with a doughnut.”

A very, very big thanks to JFK Library archivist Stacey Chandler for this guest Tumblr post!
